How can we help your child?
At Smart Start Tutors we use a 3 step process in order to give your child the skills they need to go from struggling reader to confident reader with a renewed love for reading.
1
Sign-Up for an Initial Assessment
This allows our team to get a baseline for your child's reading levels so we can create an individualized learning plan to help them close the gap or move beyond grade level expectations. Learn How to Get Started.
2
We Create An Individualized Learning Plan
We create a customized roadmap that aligns with your child's needs, goals, learning style and interests. We use the initial assessment to gauge progress overtime.
3
Students Learn How to Maintain Progress
After graduating from our program, your child will have the tools, techniques and confidence to take what they've learned and apply it to all subjects so they can be successful in and out of the classroom. Reading is the foundation for success in school and life. Let us give your child a smart start.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
HOW WE TEACH YOUR CHILD TO MASTER READING
Every session is customized to meet the exact needs and goals of your child so that we don’t waste time on skills that your child has already mastered but instead we focus on mastering the skills your child still needs.

We incorporate games, movement, multi-sensory activities and brain breaks into every session for every student to keep lessons engaging, fun, and most importantly effective. With this in mind, below are some resources that we could not do our job without and that we adapt to use strategically to meet the varying needs of our students.
A Structured Literacy Approach
Discover The Orton-Gillingham Approach

At Smart Start, all of our instructors are trained in the
O-G methodology with proven success.
Have you heard the term Orton-Gillingham used again and again but have no idea what it means? We got you!
Orton-Gillingham is a methodology developed in the 1930s by neuropsychiatrist and pathologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton and educator, psychologist Anna Gillingham. It is a structured literacy approach which breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and then builds on those skills over time.
The Orton-Gillingham methodology, or OG, uses multi-sensory instruction
-
Sight,
-
Hearing,
-
Touch
-
Movement.
This multi-sensory approach helps students connect language with letters and words.
The OG approach was the first of its kind to use explicit, direct, sequential, systematic, multi-sensory instruction to teach reading. This approach is not only effective for all readers but vital for teaching students with Dyslexia.
